Travel Phrasal Verbs
1. Take
off – to leave
Ex; 1) The aeroplane took
off.
2) The aeroplane is ready to take off.
2. Touchdown
– to land
Ex; Plane has just
touched down.
3. Get
away – to go on holiday
Ex; I really need a
getaway.
4. Turn
up – arrived/get in
Ex; 1) What time does
your train get in?
2) At what time does your
flight turn up?
5. See
off – to say goodbye
Ex; I’m going to see him off.
6. Pick
up – to collect/to receive
Ex; Your parents are here
to pick you up.
7. Set
off/out – start a journey
Ex; At what time are you
setting off/setting out?
8. Held
up – delayed
Ex; My train was held up
at another station.
9. Drop
off – to leave
Ex; I came to drop my
cousin off at the airport.
10. Check-in/out – to register/ to leave
Ex; We have to check out
at 11:00 am tomorrow.
11. Get on/off – enter/exit
Ex; Get on the
bus/train/flight.
Note: get on/off is only
used for public or heavy
transportation.
12. Get in/out – enter/exit
Ex; 1) Get out of the taxi.
2) Get off of plane.
13. Stopover – break, pause
Ex; If you’re travelling
from England to Australia, you often have a stopover in Asia that may be in
Singapore.
Note: Stopover is used
for more than 24 hrs.
14. Layover – Break, pause
Ex; There’s a layover in
the journey between the two countries.
Note: Layover is used for a short period of time, say,
less than 24 hrs.
