Common English Idioms


 As every language has its own idioms and phrases which makes the languages more interesting. So, in this lesson, we’ll be going to learn 10 idioms that we use in our day to day (daily) life.

So, let’s get started...

 

     1. When pigs fly – something which will never happen

   Sentence – He will getting married when pigs fly.

     

      2. A piece of cake – something that is easy to do

    Sentence – Convincing my parents to let me go to the picnic with my friends is a piece of cake for me.

     

      3. To cut corners – to do something badly

Sentence – Your child really cut corners in the test.

      

      4. To feel under the weather – feeling unwell

Sentence – I’m feeling under the weather so I can’t go to school.

     

       5. Don’t judge a book by its cover – don’t judge someone by their appearance.

Sentence – When I heard the name of the town I had some wrong thoughts about that, but those thoughts turn out to be don’t judge a book by its cover. The town was really fantastic.

     

       6. Let the cat out of the bag – to reveal the secret (may or may not be accidental)

Sentence – Cops asked the criminals to let the cat out of the bag.

      

       7. Giving someone the cold shoulder – to ignore someone

Sentence – It’s very rude to give someone the cold shoulder.

      

       8. Add insult to injury – to make the situation more worse

Sentence – In order to add insult to injury, the teacher punished him even after scolding him in front of the entire class.

     

       9. Speak of the devil – the person you’re talking about appears at that same moment

Sentence – Hey Sam, it’s a speak of the devil, I was just talking about your score in the match.

     

      10. To cost an arm and a leg – something which is expensive

Sentence – Starting a new outlet in the New York City cost me an arm and a leg.
